What is POSM?

Point of Sale Materials

Definition

Point of Sale Materials (POSM) are physical or digital marketing materials placed in retail environments to attract attention, communicate key messages, and drive purchase at the point of sale. They include shelf strips, wobblers, FSDUs, display stands, ceiling hangers, digital screens, and header cards.

Examples of POSM in FMCG

  • A free-standing display unit (FSDU) in the middle of the cereal aisle for a new launch
  • Shelf talkers showing price promotion mechanics
  • A branded shipper/case display for impulse confectionery near checkouts
  • Digital screens at wine displays showing food pairing suggestions

POSM in the FMCG Industry

POSM is a central output of trade marketing and shopper marketing teams. Effective POSM can significantly increase awareness and sales uplift at point of purchase. However, retailers are increasingly restrictive about POSM in-store to maintain store standards — making every POSM opportunity more valuable and harder to secure.

Why POSM Matters for Your FMCG Career

POSM briefing, production management, and compliance measurement are core skills for Trade Marketing Managers and Shopper Marketing Managers. Managing POSM budgets efficiently — balancing investment against in-store compliance rates — is a practical commercial challenge covered in FMCG interviews.
