Insider Tips for Supply Chain Manager Interviews

  1. Be ready to walk through a specific S&OP cycle you ran — what data inputs, who's in the room, how you resolve the unconstrained vs constrained demand gap.
  2. Prepare a supply disruption example — how you identified, escalated, and resolved a shortage or supplier failure.
  3. Know your KPIs: OTIF, forecast accuracy (MAPE/WMAPE), days of inventory, waste/write-off rates.
  4. Demonstrate cross-functional influence — supply chain managers work across sales, finance, and manufacturing.
  5. For senior roles, be ready to discuss your approach to S&OP process design, not just execution.

Common Interview Questions

How to approach this: Use the STAR method — keep the Situation brief, spend the most time on your specific Actions ("I did X because Y"), and always end with a quantified Result. Avoid vague outcomes like "it went well" — give a number.

Worked STAR Answer Example

Question: Describe a time you managed a significant supply disruption.
S Situation

A key single-source ingredient supplier announced a 6-week production shutdown due to a factory fire, threatening supply of our best-selling ambient range.

T Task

I needed to manage the gap, protect retail availability, and develop a medium-term sourcing solution within 72 hours.

A Action

I convened an emergency S&OP with commercial, manufacturing, and procurement leads, allocated constrained stock to priority customers using a fair-share model, contacted two alternative suppliers for emergency qualification, and negotiated a supply bridge from our EU manufacturing site to cover the shortfall.

R Result

We maintained supply to our top-5 accounts throughout the disruption with only a brief 2-week shortage to smaller customers. The alternative supplier was qualified within 8 weeks and became a permanent second-source partner.
